Broadfoot first served in India in the late 1820s with the 34th Native Infantry Madras Army. After returning to Britain to study at Addiscombe, he rejoined the Madras Army, commissariat department, in 1838 serving with distinction during the latter stages of the First Afghan War, famously prevailing against the majority to insist on the defense of Jalalabad. After the lifting of the siege, Broadfoot joined the relieving army under Major-General George Pollock and distinguished himself in the at Mamu Khel, Jagdalak, and Tezin. In October he was promoted brevet major and made a CB. He had caught the eye of the governor-general, Lord Ellenborough, for his inspirational role at Jalalabad, and was made commissioner at Tenasserim in Burma, but his health suffered in the climate, and he requested a transfer. "In 1844 Sir Henry Hardinge, the new governor-general, appointed him his agent for the north-western frontier: an important position when war with the Sikhs seemed likely. He reported on the Punjab situation, negotiated with the Sikhs and, when war seemed imminent, gathered supplies for the army. In December 1845 the Sikhs invaded British territory. Broadfoot served on Hardinge's staff and was at the battles of Mudki and Ferozeshahr. Killed in action at the latter place. See Riddick 73. Sikh War, 1848-1849. Author was educated at Rugby. Entered the Bengal Army in 1846. He arrived in India in March 1847, and before the end of the month was sent up to Benares to do duty with the 9th Native Infantry. At the end of the following September he was posted to the 2nd European Regiment (later 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers), and he joined that regiment at Subathu early in the succeeding November. On the outbreak of the Second Sikh war he accompanied his regiment into the field and served with it throughout the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, including the affair of Rumnagar, the passage of the Chenab, the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat, at which last he was slightly wounded, and the pursuit of the Sikhs to Peshawar, at which place he served with the corps for some time after the close of the campaign. He subsequently marched with the regiment to Lahore, arriving there in May 1849, and at that place, on the 20th of June, he died of a fever resulting from the hardships and privations of the campaign. Photos. "In the Second Anglo-Sikh War Daly took part in the operations at Multan He was mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous gallantry by Brigadier-General Stalker and Brigadier-General Dundas. He joined Lord Gough's army, was present at the battle of Gujrat on 21 February 1849, took part in the pursuit under Sir Walter Gilbert of the Sikh army, and was present at the capture of Attack and the occupation of Peshawar. On 28 May 1849 Daly was appointed to command the 1st Punjab cavalry with directions to raise it in co-operation with Major George St Patrick Lawrence, the deputy commissioner of the district. Daly raised and trained a fine unit, and in February 1850 marched with it under Sir Charles Napier to punish the Afridis. He took part in the action of the Kohat Pass, and remained to occupy Kohat as an outpost. His regiment and his own services were praised by Napier. In October 1851 he served with the field force under Captain Coke from Kohat to Thal.
