Facsimile reprint of 1927. 264p. Photos. Maury is credited with being the founder of the science of oceanography and wrote extensively on the subject. He joined the Confederate Navy at the start of the Civil War. As chief of James River and harbor defenses, he mined the river approaches to Richmond.
